Clay is six-foot-four of pure muscled alpha.
It's a good thing he isn't lacking in the confidence department...
Because only a real man can handle a female Sheriff by his side.
But I’m not here to resurrect an old love,
Especially not with the man who gave me my first heartbreak.
I'm back to do the job my father no longer can.
Yet Clay’s father just showed up with trouble at his tail,
And we're forced back into each others lives.

Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
“Ooh, how’s my girl’s first day on the job?”
“Amber, this is supposed to be a secure line for emergencies only.”
“I know, I know, I’m sorry,” my best friend said sheepishly. “I just wanted to wish you good luck. It’s not every day Sunville gets a new sheriff. Have you cuffed anyone yet?”
“Amber, honey, I literally just clocked in.”
“Better get to it, babe! Legend has it that your father arrested ten bikers on his first day as sheriff.”
I rolled my eyes, chuckling fondly. “I’m pretty sure he made that story up to sound cooler than he is.”
“There’s a lot of truth in fiction, you know. I wouldn’t dismiss it so easily.”
Larry from dispatch crackled over my radio. “Uh, Sheriff?” he said. “We’ve got a 10-48 at Little Anvil Bar. Would you mind checking it out?”
“10-4, on my way,” I radioed back. I pressed my cell to my ear. “I gotta go, Amber.”
She squealed, way too excited for a run-of-the-mill disturbance call. “Go get ‘em, tiger. Tell me all about it tonight, okay?”
“Okay, okay. Love you.”
“Love you too, babe!”
I hung up the call, flicked on my patrol vehicle’s lights, and sped down Main Street, parking right outside the bar in question. I knew it wasn’t very professional, but I was excited. This was my very first call as the newly minted sheriff of Sunville. I was eager to get my boots on the ground and make a difference in my community—and prove to the naysayers they were wrong. I had what it took to take my father’s place, regardless of what the rumor mill might be saying.
Little Anvil Bar was a seedy kind of place, a small brick building crammed between a rundown hardware store and an abandoned apartment complex that was supposed to have been demolished years ago. The floors were sticky, there was next to no natural light, and the air reeked of alcohol, sweat, and cleaning chemicals.
How it has four out of five stars on Yelp, I’ll never know.
As I stepped into the space, I spotted two men by the bar. Unfortunately, both were very familiar to me.
“Where are you hiding him?” my father, Pete Longlodge, growled menacingly. “Come on, Callaghan. I know you’re covering for him.”
“Don’t fucking touch me!” Clay hissed, shoving my father off him.
I stepped in immediately, flashing my badge. “Enough, you two. Don’t make me whip out the handcuffs.” I glared at my father. “What the hell are you doing here, Dad?”
Dad smoothed his polo shirt with a huff. He may have been in his mid-sixties, but nobody would know it just by looking at him. He still had a full head of dark hair —albeit with streaks of grey at the temples— and strong arms and a wide chest that made him look like a linebacker. The only true evidence of his age was the cane he needed for his bad hip.
I crossed my arms. “You’re supposed to be relaxing at home.”
“I feel fine, honey. The doctor said some exercise would do me some good. I was just out for a walk.”
“Then what brings you here?” I sighed, frustrated. “You dug the old police scanner out of the basement, didn’t you?”
“I might have.”
“You’re retired, Dad. It’s not your place to get involved with police matters anymore.”
“I know, but—”
