Penny

He opened the door and we stumbled backward into the room.

There was no time for talking.

I didn’t need to wonder because his large hands on my clothes were intentional, eager—clearly, he needed this as much as I did.

And I couldn’t bear to wait any longer.

I shut off my brain and let myself enjoy the feeling of him ripping off my clothes.

My shirt fell to the floor, followed by my jeans. I stepped out of them and fell backward onto the bed after he unhooked my bra. My own hands fumbled with his belt, but I managed to whip it off and tossed it across the room.

“You’re all mine tonight,” he said as he kissed me and held me against the bed, his hands moving down to my panties. “I’m going to make you scream with ecstasy. And then you’ll do it again and again for me, Princess. All that matters is you.”

His lips sucked along my neck before moving lower to my chest. He stared at me with a mischievously sexy sneer, and I swear my heart jumped in my throat.

Sam

“You know, even on his deathbed, John was more concerned about others than himself,” I said, staring at the small crowd of people gathered for my best friend’s funeral. “That’s just the type of man he was. He had a big heart and a good soul, and the world—at least my world—is going to be darker without him here.”

I’d never been the type to talk in front of crowds. Opening up about my feelings was the last thing I wanted to do, but when Penelope asked me to say a few words about her brother, I couldn’t say no. John Whitmore wasn’t just a best friend to me—he was practically another brother.

And now he was gone.

Taken too soon from this world in a tragic accident.

My eyes landed on his sister as I finished my eulogy. Mascara stained her cheeks, even as she dabbed them with a napkin. Her strawberry blonde hair was pulled back into a French twist, but loose tendrils fell around her face.

It had been years since I’d seen her, and I was amazed at the woman she had grown into. My heart ached at the sight of her in tears. I couldn’t recall ever seeing Penny cry, even though she pretty much lived with us at times growing up.

She was strong, always ready to take on whatever problems came her way.

She and John had been close. John had practically raised her himself. Even when she was away at college, they spoke nearly daily, and John would rush up there to her in a heartbeat if he suspected she needed anything.

And now Penny was all alone.

Well, not totally.

She had me and my brothers.

I had made a promise to her brother, one that he didn’t even have to ask me to make.

After I stepped away from the podium, I took my seat next to Penny.

She took my large hand in one of her tiny ones and squeezed.

“Thank you, Sam,” she whispered. “That was beautiful.”
