Chapter One Look Inside
Chapter One Look Inside
“Ugh, not you again.”
“Nice to see your customer service is still in the shitter,” I replied flatly.
“The hell do you want, Rogers?” Clay continued with a scoff.
I hadn’t even taken two steps into the Callaghan Campers office before they surrounded me, all of them with their arms crossed and chests puffed out. Boone, Clay, Brody, and Dylan Callaghan may have had strength in numbers, but they didn’t intimidate me—no matter how tough they all thought they were.
This was just a part of our weekly song and dance.
Their workspace was… quaint. Conventional, underwhelming. They’d renovated an old cabin about two miles out from the national park’s entrance and used the back lot to store their inventory. Rows upon rows of campers sat outside—from Class A motorhomes to camper vans to toy haulers—all with massive RENT ME signs stuck on their windshields in obnoxiously large red block letters.
I flipped through my notebook, pulling up all the citations I’d marked down today alone. “The ranger’s station has been getting a lot of complaints,” I said. “Your customers have been caught littering, feeding the wildlife, and hiking off-path, which has been destroying endangered fauna.”
Boone, the eldest brother, took a step forward. I could read people well enough to know he was in charge here, the head of the operation. There was a solid presence about him, his stoic sureness making him the smart choice in terms of leadership. Nothing I couldn’t handle, though.
“This concerns the campers, not us,” he said. “Quit dragging my family’s business into it.”
I stood my ground, holding his dark gaze. “Don’t worry. I’ve issued warnings and fines where necessary. But as a park ranger, it’s my responsibility to resolve issues at the source.”
“Issues,” Dylan echoed with a sneer. I wasn’t fond of his tone, but Dylan was the smallest of the brothers. All it took was one glance to know he was all bark and no bite. “We’re not the ones littering,” he continued. “Or feeding wildlife or hiking off-path.”
“No, but you’re responsible for bringing in the kind of clientele that do.”
Brody sighed. He was by far the easiest to get along with. Full-on confrontation was not his speed. “Listen, Logan, it’s not like we can be held responsible for everything they do once they leave the lot. We always remind them to respect their surroundings. What more do you want from us?”
“What I want is your business to stop being a huge pain in my ass. Grey Peak National Park is protected land. If you can’t keep your customers in line—”
“You’ll what?” Clay challenged. “Slap a pair of cuffs on us for running a legitimate business? Oh, wait, you can’t. Even if we were doing something illegal—which we’re not—you’re just a boy scout pretending to be a cop.”
Clay was by far my least favorite of the Callaghan brothers. Word around the park ranger station was that he was trouble. A delinquent in his youth. He had no problem being aggressive, and it showed. He squared up with me, got in my space. I didn’t bat an eye or take his bait. This was child’s play.
After six separate tours overseas, very little fazed me anymore.
“You come in here every week and antagonize us,” Clay seethed. “This is harassment. I have half a mind to report you to your supervisor.”
